The WPS-2000 is an integrated multi-staged closed-loop system for detoxification and neutralization of hazardous waste. The system uses only electrical energy to break the chemical bonds of the hazardous waste. There is no open flame combustion. It will process almost any type of waste and operates up to 17000C. It is a compact, mobile unit that offers(1) high destruction and removal efficiency,(2) extremely low operating cost and on-site serviceability, and (3) high mobility for on-site or emergency response needs.
Process Description
The hazardous wastes are first vaporized in the evaporator and then directed
to a thermal reactor for chemical decomposition. A fluidized bed reactor is
integrated for removing toxic heavy metals and neutralizing acidic gases. The
sub-micron sized particles of the heavy metals are nucleated and condensed onto
the bed and can be processed to recover the pure metals. Acidic gases passing
through the absorbing agents in the bed are also neutralized. Therefore, the
process removes halogen acids, as well as the products of the destruction of
halogenated VOCs or SVOCs.
The process detoxifies and neutralizes waste streams resulting in non-toxic inorganic products (salts) that are retained inside the system for later replacement or regeneration, and the gases (only carbon dioxide and water vapor) are released into the atmosphere. No other undesired by-products or uncontrolled gaseous emissions are released. Any residues are effectively detoxified or neutralized and can be permanently disposed of in a landfill.
On-Site Advantages
The WPS-2000 is designed as a transportable unit which can be brought on-site
right to the source of the hazardous waste. However, it can also be used as
a stand-alone treatment center, integrated with on-going plant operations, or
used in-line with a plant's current waste treatment process. Because of the
unique compact modular design, it can be permanently installed on-site for large
volume generators. The number of modular units required will depend on the volume
of waste to be treated, the degree of redundancy desired to allow for normal
maintenance, the potential for increased volumes, and the possibility of emergencies
due to system interruptions.
The WPS-2000 accepts drums, tanks, pools or any type of continuous feed. An added indirect environmental advantage of the WPS-2000 is that it precludes the need for transportation off-site. This reduces both transportation and associated liability costs. The WPS-2000 therefore, significantly reduces the overall treatment costs.
Process Flexibility
The system is a skid-mounted, modular system. The control panel can be removed
from the skid and located in a controlled environment or behind shield walls.
Specific-purpose filter modules can be added to remove selected contaminants
at appropriate points in the treatment process. Special monitors can also be
implemented for additional control of individual contaminants. For economical
recovery and recycling of by-products, additional components such as condensers
can be added.
Targeted Wastes
The WPS-2000 integrates innovative concepts resulting in the effective destruction
of a wide variety of hazardous wastes, including organics, inorganics, and heavy
metals, either individually or as a complex mixtures. Since its design is particularly
suited for acute wastes, the process is effective for destroying polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, pesticides, chloroflorocarbons (CFCs), etc. The WPS-2000
is also used to destroy hazardous chemical compounds of low-level radioactive
mixed wastes, resulting in significant volume reduction. And when combined with
a first-stage, starved-air combustion process, it can be used to treat medical
waste. This combination is designated our MDS-2000.
